Dean Kelly was born in Kwazulu-Natal in 1962, and studied Fine Arts at Natal Technicon.
He started his career as Art Director in the publication industry, before becoming a full time artist in 1998 working on numerous commissions for casino’s around South Africa, as well as various advertising campaigns, murals, portraits, abstracts and commissions, with the FNB Soccer World Cup themed Soweto (2010) and Bloemfontein (2008) Cooling Towers Art being the most recognised.
Deans mediums of preference are Acrylic on Canvas.
Dean is the most well known for South African heritage pieces, visually telling stories of famous battle scenes.
"It's a blessing to paint for a living, so I try to tell a story with every work that I create. I will plan an idea for weeks, doing sketches etc. before putting brush to canvas.
